The risk hire Thailand didn't have, found abroad and brought home
A small pool, and everyone in it already being approached
The client, a financial services organisation, was forming a new Emerging Technology Risk team, and the brief was the manager to anchor it. The role had been open for several months before we took it on.
The difficulty was structural. The pool of emerging technology risk professionals in Thailand is small, and demand from financial services firms for candidates with regulatory experience is high. Everyone qualified was being approached, by everyone.
Widened the market instead of re-fishing the pool
Because the local pool was exhausted, we widened the search to Thai professionals living abroad who had previously worked in Thailand. That prior local experience was the point: it meant they could adapt to the Thai regulatory environment quickly rather than learning it from scratch.
The candidate we landed was heavily in demand, with several companies approaching him at the same time. An established relationship and open communication were what made it possible to manage the process and hold his attention through to offer.
When the local pool is empty, change the map
The speed was scope, not urgency. The role had defeated the local market for as long as the local market was the whole search, and it closed quickly once it stopped being one. That route is now deliberate: when the obvious pool is exhausted, we widen where we look rather than fish the same water again.
